Lazy Deer Cabin is in the northern part of Alleghany County, close to Mouth of Wilson and the Virginia line. The cabin is only 1 minute from the Red Dog Bistro, 8 minutes from the Motley's BBQ and 20 minutes from the world-famous Catering Shatley Springs restaurant.
Attractions include:
- THE NEW RIVER: it is one of the High Country’s primary attractions and one of the few protected and pristine rivers in the southeast. It is the second oldest river in the world! Deerwood Park adjoins the New River State Park which gives you access to the New River.
- BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY: America’s Favorite Drive! The Parkway’s 469 miles through Virginia and North Carolina offer many ways to explore rich traditions. Hiking, bicycling, concerts, picnicking, and camping...It's all here. Millions of visitors enjoy the Blue Ridge Parkway each year.
- NATURE & PARKS: where you can enjoy nearly every type of outdoor activities: camping, hiking, climbing, fishing, picnicking, horseback riding and more. - New River State Park (10 miles from the cabin – US 221 access) – Grayson Highlands State Park, where you can see wild ponies (15 miles) - Doughton Park, the largest recreation area on the Blue Ridge Parkway (17 mile - just off the Blue Ridge Parkway) - Mt Jefferson State Natural Area (24 miles) - Stone Mountain State Park, with his massive granite dome (25 miles).
- CANOEING: River Camp USA (4.3 miles) - Riverside Canoeing (4.6 miles) - New River Outfitters (10 miles) - Zaloo’s Canoes (22 miles) – RiverGirl Fishing Company (32 miles) – Wahoo’s Adventures (49 miles - Voted #1 on TripAdvisor).
- TRAILS: New River State Park, Mt Jefferson State Natural Area, Doughton Park, Grayson Highlands State park, with access to the Appalachian Trail. And just a little farther, Elk Knob State Park (43 miles), Grandfather Mountain, with the famous Mile High Swinging Bridge (67 miles).
- MOUNTAIN BIKE: W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir, with some of the best mountain biking in the southeast (38 miles) - Rocky Knob Mountain Bike Park (46 miles).
- VIRGINIA CREEPER TRAIL: world famous 35-mile rail trail, located in southwestern Virginia. Best known as a biking trail with "the 17-mile downhill bike ride", in reality the Virginia Creeper Trail is a multi-use trail open year round to hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding (62 miles from Cabin).
- TOWNS: you can visit local shops, art galleries, antique stores at the nearby towns of Sparta (13 miles), Jefferson & West Jefferson (24 miles), Boone (48 miles), Blowing Rock (53 miles). Or you can visit the town of Galax, VA, home to the World's oldest and largest Old Fiddlers' Convention (28 miles) or enjoy the stunning vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountain to the rural township of Piney Creek.
- SKI: There are 3 ski resort in the High Country: Appalachian Ski Mountain in Blowing Rock, also an excellent location for snow shoeing and cross country skiing (50 miles) – Sugar Mountain in Banner Elk (61 miles) – Beech Mountain Resort, the highest ski resort in Eastern North America, at 5506 ft. above sea level (69 miles). Enjoy also one of the 30 lanes at Hawksnest Tubing, the largest snow tubing park on the East Coast (59 miles)!
